Maxon 49-HX (sold for intercom function only, in NZ)
This is probably one of the better value for money pillion to rider intercoms available in NZ at the moment. It is easy to use, easy to install into your helmet without damage or modifications, Runs on 3 alkaline AA penlight cells, and has either PTT via a handlebar switch or side button on the unit and has an user adjustable VOX mode
These are 5 channel synthesised lightweight, compact, short range radios operating in the USA 49Mhz band. They consist of a small pocket size unit containing the 3 "AA" size batteries and radio and a 800mm cable connecting the adaptable microphone-headset unit. The radios have five, thumbwheel selectable frequencies, volume control ( only for the radio, not the intercom volume as this is preset inside the unit ) and variable vox sensitivity.
They also have an integral "Push to Talk" button and a "PTT" extension cable, which could be attached to the handlebar of a motorcycle and activated via a thumb. The sets are switchable from automatic (vox operation) to manual (PTT). There is a "Low Battery" indicator light that comes on when the batteries get down to 3.2 Volt and should be replaced. The unit has the facility to plug in an extra headset to enable a rider and pillion to communicate (optional pillion headset is supplied ) when switched to "Intercom mode" the pillion headset/rider function does not have "access" to the the radio transceiver .
The headset assembly consists of a detachable boom microphone, whip antenna and earphone. The unit comes supplied with Velcro strap to attach the remote "PTT" thumb-switch to the handle bars and self adhesive Velcro patches to enable the detachable short flexible whip antenna, boom microphone and earphone to be affixed to a motorcycle or safety helmet, comfortably.
The unit can be placed in a convenient pocket or clipped to the belt at the waist. Note: this radio equipment is not waterproof, so place the unit in a good quality zip lock bag. The headset components are not quite so fragile and would be somewhat protected from rain if fitted to a full face helmet. For proper Vox use it is almost necessary to install this unit inside a full face helmet
Acoustically, a full face helmet is much more quiet than an open face helmet due to the lower wind and engine noise on the open microphone etc. You will experience more false triggering with an open-face helmet, because of ambient noise ,ie engine and wind, this may require the use of the manually operated handlebar mounted PTT button. MORE VOLUME : If you are going to run the Maxon HX-49 purely as a rider pillion unit with the radio part disabled ( unsolder one leg of the 10.240 MHz reference crystal) then the volume in the headsets of the unit can be increased markedly by turning up the deviation control!! ( very small white variable resistor in the centre of the circuit board) (see picture) Mark its position with an indelible marker BEFORE you move it so you can put it back to how it was if needed!
HX-49 circuit board Deviation control ( affects intercom headset volume) The receiver volume control has no effect on the intercom function, how ever the volume control can be implemented with a few circuit modification. if this is really required email me about this, it is not difficult to do.
